What Size Yard Do You Need for a Bounce House? A Phoenix Homeowner's Guide
The #1 question we get at AZ Party Oasis isn't about price — it's "will it fit in my yard?" After thousands of deliveries across Peoria, Glendale, Surprise, and the Phoenix West Valley, we can usually answer within a minute. This guide gives you the same answer, with the exact numbers for every type of rental.
The quick rule of thumb
Take the unit's listed size and add 5 feet on every side, plus about 4 feet behind for the blower. A standard 13x13 bounce house really wants an area of roughly 18x22 feet of clear, flat space. Every product page on our site lists both the unit size and the required setup area, so you never have to guess.
Space requirements by rental type
- Standard bounce houses (13x13): ~18x22 ft clear area, 15 ft overhead clearance. Fits most West Valley backyards, even newer builds with smaller lots.
- Large bounce houses & combos (15x15 and up): ~20x25 ft. Combo units with slides are also longer in one direction — measure the long side.
- Water slides (14–23 ft tall): ~20x35 ft for mid-size slides, up to 25x40 ft for our tallest slides — plus a hose bib within 50 ft. Height matters too: check for tree limbs and roof overhangs.
- Obstacle courses: the big space eaters — 30 to 60+ ft in a straight line. These usually go in larger yards, side yards, or parks.
- Dunk tanks & mechanical bull: ~15x15 ft, but they're heavy — they need drive-up access or a wide gate path.
Grass, gravel, or concrete?
Arizona yards aren't like Midwest yards, and that's fine — we set up on all of these every weekend:
- Grass: best option. We stake the unit directly into the ground.
- Gravel/desert landscaping: very common in Peoria and Surprise — no problem. We use sandbag anchors instead of stakes and put a tarp down first.
- Concrete/pavers: fine for bounce houses with sandbag anchoring. For water slides, concrete works but grass is more comfortable for the splash zone.
- Artificial turf: yes — sandbags again, no stakes, so your turf is never punctured.
The checklist before we arrive
- Measure the gate. Our hand trucks need about 36 inches of clear path. Most single gates are 36–42 inches; if your access is tighter, tell us when you book and we'll plan for it.
- Power within 100 ft. Each blower needs a standard outlet on its own circuit. Backyard party far from an outlet? Rent one of our quiet generators with the unit.
- Water within 50 ft (water slides only). A standard garden hose connection is all we need — we bring the hose.
- Look up. Power lines, tree limbs, and patio overhangs are the most common surprises. Slides need up to 25 ft of overhead clearance.
- Sprinklers off the morning of delivery, and dog waste picked up (our crews thank you!).
What about HOA rules?
Most West Valley HOAs (Vistancia, Marley Park, and similar communities) allow bounce houses for private backyard parties without any approval. Front yards and community common areas usually DO need approval — check your HOA portal, and if they ask for proof of insurance, we'll happily provide a certificate. Planning a party at a Peoria park instead? Most city parks require a permit for inflatables and a generator for power — call us and we'll walk you through it.
Small yard? You still have great options
If your usable space is under 18x20 ft, don't give up. Our standard 13x13 bounce houses fit tighter lots, and character themes (Spider-Man, Unicorn, Disney Princess) come in compact footprints. For toddler parties, a small bounce house plus a snow cone machine beats an oversized unit every time.
